After college graduation I wasn’t just looking for a job, I was looking for a career. Previous employment opportunities had led me to organizations that I felt didn’t value innovation or creativity. It was difficult for me to use my degree in a way that made a difference.
It was important to me that I work in a collaborative, rather than competitive, work environment. I wanted to work for a company that I could take care of, and a company that took care of me. USAA is that company.
From the start, I knew development was a top priority at USAA. With no prior experience in this field, I was given the training and resources necessary to excel in my current position. The best part is also being able to develop personally and professionally toward my ultimate goal.
I’ve had multiple opportunities to find my leadership style and learn about myself. Along the way, my leadership team has helped me fine-tune my interviewing skills, résumé, and gain valuable experience outside of my job duties. I receive valuable feedback and advice on how to reach the next level. It’s always a work in progress, but I feel confident that I am going in the right direction.
Meaningful work has always been important to me. USAA supports the military men and women that give us our freedom. I appreciate the way the work that I do benefits others. I have the opportunity to serve the military community by protecting their families and future.
In addition to giving back at work, USAA also has volunteer opportunities available to give back to the community. I was voted USAA Phoenix’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year. I love working for a company that recognizes commitment to the community outside of work hours.
Every year, USAA partners with the United Way. This two-week period promotes proactive volunteerism in making our city a better place to live. Volunteering is a huge part of my life, so I was given the opportunity to act as the Employee Chair. With support from employees all the way to the general manager, I was given the opportunity to successfully drive an important philanthropic initiative in our corporate environment – an opportunity most millennials can only dream of!
USAA’s support extends to work, home, and school, so when I come into work, I can give 100% every day. I work on a beautiful campus in North Phoenix, where I can take a break in one of USAA’s Relaxation Rooms, get to know my peers over a game of ping-pong or Wii-Golf in the Energize Room, and head to the onsite gym after work. USAA takes care of their employees like a family, which makes coming to work that much more fun.
