11 Interview Questions for Fresh Graduates

Young woman graduate interviewing with two managers

With your rewarding university days behind you, you’re now ready to take on the employment world!

If you’ve already started the hunt, you may have noticed a similar dilemma plaguing recent graduates across the country. Entry-level jobs sometimes require years of experience on top of a college degree. For those fresh out of school, this requirement isn’t always possible to satisfy. So, what should you do?

While you may not have two years of full-time work experience to boast about, there is still a ton for young graduates to leverage in an interview. With this in mind, the following are some of the most commonly asked job interview questions for fresh graduates and recommendations on how to best answer them.

11 Interview Questions for Fresh Graduates

Below is our list of typical interview questions for college graduates venturing into the workforce for the first time.

Tell me about yourself.

Interviewers mostly use this type of question to get to know more about you and your background. It may be one of the most popular interview questions for college graduates, but it is also a critical one.

You can start by giving the interviewer an overview of your current activities and then providing the most important details from your history that show you’re the most qualified for the position. Talking about previous coursework and extracurriculars is always beneficial. Adding some information about the things you like, e.g., your hobbies and passions, can also be a way to ensure you are a memorable candidate.

Describe how your education has prepared you for this career.

As a broad-based question, you need to focus on the behavioral examples during your educational years. These examples usually align with the required skills for the career.

You can talk about a time you played a leading role in a class project where you gathered large amounts of data to achieve results. Provide key strengths you developed in your college experience and how they have shaped you into a strong candidate. Whether you held a leadership position in a student organization or a job, it’s still leadership experience!

Tell me about your experience during your internship.

If there’s an internship on your resume that specifically stands out as relevant, you may be asked to elaborate. You should view this chance as an opportunity to present yourself confidently and showcase your strengths. Talk about your experience in being able to meet deadlines and how the role shaped you into being able to communicate effectively. Describe the situation or challenges you encountered. Then, explain how the actions you took led to some positive outcomes.

What do you know about our company?

As a candidate, it is essential to research the company you’re applying for if you want to reply to this question the right way. Check the company’s website and review any information provided by the employer. Be prepared to answer questions concerning the company/organization’s origin, its everyday activities, and its future objectives.

Failing to know the company or the organization you are applying for will portray a lack of interest in your application and poor research skills. Make sure you are familiar with their mission and values.

What qualities would you bring to the role?

This is one of the most common interview questions for fresh graduates, but it is also one of the trickiest. The interviewer wants to know if you have qualities essential for the role you are applying for. This is your time to demonstrate what makes you unique and an excellent fit for the job.

Be honest and focus on how your skills can benefit the company in meeting its objectives.

What are your greatest strengths?

When interviewers ask about your strengths, they want to know more about your abilities and what you can bring to the table. This question is an opportunity for you to highlight why you are the best candidate for the job. Avoid lying or inflating your abilities. Be confident when sharing your strengths and provide examples of situations where you were able to use them effectively. Doing so will show the interviewer that you have a good understanding of your capabilities.

How would you deal with a difficult client?

Difficult clients are inevitable, no matter what industry you work in. How you deal with them can either make or break the sale or service. This question tests your ability to handle difficult situations. When answering this question, focus on the steps you would take to diffuse the situation and satisfy the client’s needs. Provide a detailed example of the situation, then explain how you were able to come up with a solution to resolve the issue.

What is your greatest achievement?

Your greatest achievement can be either personal or professional. This question allows the interviewer to know more about your accomplishments and what you are most proud of. When answering this question, focus on an achievement that is most relevant to the role you are applying for. If you don’t have any professional achievements yet, you can share a personal accomplishment. Just make sure it is relevant to the job.

What motivates you?

This question allows the interviewer to know more about what drives you as an employee. Do you work better under pressure? Are you motivated by working with a team, or do you prefer working independently? Be honest when you answer this question, and avoid giving clichéd responses. Instead, focus on sharing what motivates you in your work and how it can benefit the company you are applying for.

What is your greatest weakness?

This question is high up in the typical list of interview questions for fresh graduates — and for good reason. While this question may seem difficult to answer, it is an opportunity for you to highlight your self-awareness. Focus on a weakness that is NOT essential for the job you are applying for — you don’t want to highlight a weakness that might jeopardize your chances of getting hired. Show them that you are aware of your shortcomings and are willing to work on them.

Do you have any questions?

This gives you the platform to explore any subject you haven’t understood or haven’t addressed yet. Asking a question or two shows you’re excited about the role, and you’ll be able to gain tips on ways to succeed in case you get the position. You may want to ask the interviewer about their expectations of fresh graduates.

By making use of this list of job interview questions for fresh graduates, you’ll be more confident in using your university experience as real-world examples. Couple these with some stellar job-hunting tips, and you’re ready to take on the world!
