How to Reduce Your Interview Anxiety in 8 Easy Steps

Not sure how to calm down for an important job interview? Check out this guide for five helpful tips on reducing your interview anxiety.

Are you feeling nervous and anxious about your upcoming job interview? You’re not alone. Many people feel overwhelmed when it comes to interviews, and this anxiety can be a barrier to success. But don’t worry! It is possible to reduce your interview anxiety and increase your chances of acing it.

Why Does Interview Anxiety Happen?

Interview anxiety is a normal reaction to an unfamiliar situation. It happens because you are not sure of the outcome, and your brain is telling you to be prepared for any eventuality. This can cause physical symptoms like increased heart rate, sweating, and trembling.

One survey that JDP conducted on what makes people feel anxious even found that 29% feel the most jittery at a job interview, second to public speaking (44%), and even more than going on a first date (14%). This data shows just how common it is to feel anxious at a job interview and why it’s important to learn how to regulate how you mentally and physically react.

8 Steps to Reduce Interview Anxiety

Job interviews are undoubtedly stressful, and the key to overcoming that stress is preparation. Here are five steps you can take to reduce your jitters and prepare for a successful experience.

1. Prepare thoroughly.

To make sure you’re fully prepared for your upcoming interview, it’s important to have a firm grasp of the company and position being discussed, as well as practice responding to common questions. According to the same JDP survey, 64% of interviewees even research their interviewers if they have this information.

Additionally, ensure that you understand your own strengths and qualifications so that you can confidently demonstrate them during the conversation. Many job seekers find it helpful to conduct a mock interview with a friend or family member before the real one. This is an excellent way to practice common questions, refine your answers, and gain confidence before entering the room for the big day.

2. Get organized.

Have all the necessary documents, such as a copy of your resume and references, ready to go. When you arrive at the interview, take a few minutes to make sure that you have everything that you need, and don’t forget to bring along extra copies of your resume and any other materials the interviewer might need.

3. Arrive early.

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled interview time to give yourself time to calm down and mentally prepare. Being there early will give you a chance to get familiar with the environment and familiarize yourself with the layout of the office. This also provides you with the opportunity to come up with talking points that can help you stand out and demonstrate your skills.

4. Practice deep breathing.

Take a few deep breaths before the interview to help calm your nerves. A good trick is to count to five while breathing in and then five while breathing out. Studies have also shown that deep breathing can help reduce anxiety and stress. Meditation also helps to relax and focus the mind, so if you have time before your interview, try meditating for a few minutes to help you mentally prepare.

5. Try to focus on the present moment and what is happening in the interview rather than worrying about the future outcome.

Remember that the interviewer is just trying to get to know you and evaluate whether you’re a good fit for the position. When you focus on the present moment, you can relax and be yourself. This is your chance to show off your skills and demonstrate why you’re the best candidate for the job.

6. Visualize a positive outcome.

Visualization is a powerful tool to manage stress. Before your interview, spend a few minutes picturing yourself walking confidently into the room, answering questions calmly, and connecting well with your interviewer. This technique helps train your mind to expect success rather than fear mistakes.

7. Practice self-care the day before.

The day before your interview, do something that helps you relax—go for a walk, listen to your favorite music, or get a good night’s sleep. Avoid cramming or staying up late reviewing notes. A well-rested and calm mind performs better than one that’s exhausted or overwhelmed.

8. Remind yourself of your strengths.

Before stepping into the interview, take a moment to remind yourself of what you bring to the table—your achievements, experiences, and skills. Confidence grows when you focus on what you’ve accomplished rather than what could go wrong. Jot down three things you’re proud of and keep them in mind as you head into the interview.

Mindset is Everything!

By taking the time to prepare and using the five steps outlined above, you can significantly reduce your anxiety and increase your chances of success. Remember that your disposition is key; approach the interview with a positive attitude and confidence in yourself, and you’ll be sure to make a great impression. Good luck!
