Well-Loved Shows
Some of the best costumes I’ve ever seen have been based on characters from well-loved shows. For a little workplace fun and bonding, try choosing a theme or show for everyone to base their costumes on. Everyone will match, hopefully, and will make for a fun alternate-universe feeling in the office for a day.

Dressing As Each Other
The best costumes, I think, are when coworkers dress as each other. It’s a fun way to really get to know each other as well. Because this year’s Halloween in the workplace may very look much different than in previous years, I recommend trying this concept remotely. Modify your workstation to look like a coworker’s, change your backdrop or still just dress up as someone. It’s good to keep the spirit alive.

Damian from Mean Girls
Every year my office has a Halloween Costume Contest, and everyone always goes all out! My favorite Halloween costume from last year was definitely Damian from Mean Girls. My General Manager came to work complete in a purple hoodie, sunglasses, and a poster that said, “She doesn’t even go here”! It gave everyone in the office a good laugh and prompted us to discuss the best movies from the 2000s during our lunch break.

Cactus
At Alisha Taylor Interiors, we live for creativity. When someone takes the time to think up and deliver on a clever costume idea, they get my admiration. The best workplace costume I’ve seen was someone dressed as a cactus! All that was required was a green shirt with some yarn sewn to it to resemble spikes and a flower in their hair. Simple and creative with an added Arizona vibe.

The Louvre
We’ve had so many great ones! Our winner last year was “The Louvre”. A group set up a “gallery” against the wall with a real live Mona Lisa and Girl with the Pearl Earring holding frames around their faces. There were tourists taking pictures, security guards in front of a red velvet rope and Van Gogh was even wandering around with a bandaged ear! That would be difficult to pull off this year in a virtual setting, I would recommend that people go mask and makeup heavy to have maximum impact over video. Famous talking heads would be a clever take on the way we are currently interacting!

Group Costumes
I love seeing colleagues dress up as a group from their favorite TV show or pop culture. I’m hoping that this year due to COVID-19, even if you work remotely, you have some fun and dress up!

Santa Claus
The best Halloween costume I’ve ever seen in the workplace was Santa Claus – and he went around giving away Company swag and fun treats! A costume idea I’d recommend this year is a Saguaro cactus with long arms — to encourage physical distancing.

Cash Cow
One of my best friends went to a final interview, on October 31st, dressed as a cash cow. She got the position! Any costume that promotes team spirit, inventiveness, and celebration of that individual is a great idea. Spread joy and shine on!
