Q&A with Dominick Ram, the first Digital Marketing Intern for Rocket Media, an award-winning Google Partner

Working at Rocket Media was definitely a challenging yet enjoyable experience. I couldn’t be happier with the way the internship went this last summer and was a great start for me on my future career path.

What degree are you pursuing and what school are you attending?

I am pursuing a degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing in the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. I am currently in my senior year and plan on graduating in May 2020.

Why did you apply for the Digital Marketing Internship with Rocket Media?

I thought it would be a good idea to gain some real-world experience over the summer before I started my senior year of college. Having an internship is highly encouraged by the Eller College and thought I’d give it a try, so I started applying to various marketing internships. My focus was mainly on digital marketing positions since I had just taken an elective in digital marketing and it really intrigued me.

What sparked my interest with Rocket Media was that they offered their digital marketing internship in person, rather than working remotely. When I was browsing summer job opportunities, the majority of the related internships were remote. I knew that I wanted to learn in person, so I had to apply!

What are some highlights from your internship experience?

Where do I even begin?! There’s so many highlights from my experience, but if I had to single out a few I’d say having the opportunity to immerse myself into two main aspects of digital marketing (paid search/SEO) was one of the best experiences in my professional career thus far. I was given the opportunity to work alongside two department heads, Sean and Micah, delving into their knowledge and work experience.

In addition, I was able to work hands-on with several of the core digital marketing software like Google Ads, Google Analytics, and Google My Business.

Another highlight was being able to work within a company with such an admirable company culture. Not only was everyone very welcoming since my fist day at Rocket, but whenever I had a question or needed help with something there was always somebody I could rely on.

What advice would you give other students interested in Rocket Media’s internship program?

If I was to give other students advise that are interested in Rocket Media’s internship, I would say be ready to learn quickly. This internship will teach you a lot of new information, programs and concepts that you will learn in such a short amount of time.

Try not to feel overwhelmed at the beginning because it will feel like information overload, but over time you’ll absorb more than you think.

Lastly, I’d say just be positive and upbeat because everyone at Rocket is very approachable and worth getting to know.

What are you looking for in a future employer?

For a future employer for myself I’d have to say that one of the biggest things for me would be stability. I want to have a job that I can rely on and have a feeling of control of what will happen in the future.

Another thing that I’m looking for in a future employer is the opportunity for career advancement.

Lastly, after working at Rocket Media and being a part of such a positive work environment, I am going to look for an employer who is invested in their employees and creating an authentic company culture.

What advice would you give other employers who are looking to provide a great experience for their interns?

It’s always good to have some sort of schedule or calendar to make sure everything gets done on time and doesn’t get forgotten. Some of the best learning experiences I had throughout my internship came up from unexpected events ranging from client requests/concerns to Google algorithm updates. For someone like me, being able to watch the solution-seeking process for unpredictable problems, gave me gave an realistic perspective of what it’s like to work in this industry and how to think critically on my feet.
