Why: Each year, Dignity Health Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers offer a highly competitive summer volunteer program for students ages 14 to 18. Dignity Health’s Volunteen Program looks to develop leaders by teaching critical thinking skills in a real workplace environment and offering education from experts in the health care industry. The “volunteens” must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, and are selected through a rigorous screening process which includes a detailed application, two letters of recommendation, and two essay questions.

“Gaining exclusive insight prepares students for a future in the health care field,” said Barb Farmer, Manager of Volunteer Services at Dignity Health Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers. “If we lay that foundation when they’re young, they will be more prepared when they graduate college. The program provides invaluable insight into the world of medicine, molding students into compassionate leaders.”
