How to Manage Employer Branding in the Tech Industry

Q&A with Shannon Grimes, Head of Employer Brand, GoDaddy – the world’s largest domain registrar.

To what do you attribute your company’s success?

Our success is all because of our team and the way they relentlessly advocate for entrepreneurs.  Watching our customers succeed online because of our hard work is priceless!

Why do you think Employer Branding is important?

Information that used to transfer by word of mouth is now all found online in seconds. Employer Branding is all about managing what, how and when candidates learn about your company.  It’s key to help talent understand if a company is right for them, by sharing an authentic view of the employee experience.  If a brand doesn’t fully own that, candidates won’t know what they can expect from you as an employer. Companies not focused on employer brand might miss out on the right talent, or attract talent that is not a great fit, and then they leave.

How would you describe your Employer Brand?

When a candidate is researching GoDaddy, they will see that GoDaddy is an innovative, mission driven company where everyone can be their true self. Fun is also a huge part of our culture, and that come through in all our EB activities.  If I had to describe how that sums up our employer brand, I’d say our brand is very authentic!

What do you do in your recruitment process that you feel differs from other companies?

We not only participate in but also create opportunities for candidates to engage with us and one another. We host open houses and meetups, host mixers for our customer care and sales new hires. We want candidates to meet our team and see how they could fit in.

What inspires you about your company’s mission statement?

GoDaddy’s mission (below) is a driving force for our employees, including myself.  We work alongside our customers as they turn their ideas into their livelihood. It’s inspiring to be part of that, it’s really the American dream in action.

To help our customers kick ass by giving them the tools, insights and people to transform their ideas and personal initiative into success, however they measure it.

What is one thing in the common workplace that you think needs to change in order for companies to achieve ultimate success?

For a company to be successful transparency needs to stop being a buzzword and start being the norm. Employees become disengaged when they don’t feel included, but they feel special when they are in the know.

What is unique about your company culture?

A lot of companies say they want people to be themselves, but GoDaddy actually supports that individuality. Tattoos? Cool. Pink hair? We love it! But also that extends to bringing your personal history, interests and talents to the table.  This company truly loves each employee for who they are, and being different won’t hold you back it actually can propel you.
