For reference, BLS estimated that 22 million employees quit their job in 2010. This number reached 40 million in 2018.

Often times, there is a stigma around job hopping, a term that refers to constant job transitions. In the human resources industry, this is often an indicator of a lack of commitment and professionalism. In fact, the one year rule- staying with an employer for at least one year- is still popular among some groups. However, with the gradual saturation of millennials in the workplace, it has become more accepted to move freely between employers.

In fact, in 2017, Gallup concluded that 51% of full-time employees that responded to their survey agreed that they were uninterested in their jobs. For many, a career must fulfill an interest that they are passionate about.

2. Overqualified

Many people may quit their job simply because they are overqualified for the position that they are performing. In this case, an employee may feel if they are not performing to their full potential. With this in mind, the employee may become bored and disinterested in the company. Likewise, if an employee is overqualified for a position, it is likely that they are being underpaid for their skills and knowledge.

3. Company Culture

Company culture is a serious determinant of overall job satisfaction. Full-time employees spend at least 40 hours each week at their workplace. With this in mind, it is important to be surrounded by like-minded people that share similar goals and value. Unsurprisingly, companies with poor culture have higher turnover rates than companies that prioritize culture. In other words, toxic work environments dissuade employees from staying in a position longer than they have to.

Ultimately, quitting your job is a personal decision that only you can determine. Job satisfaction, work environment, and overall compensation are factors to consider.
